Thanks again to Haalo who manages greatfully all events, Thanks again to Kalyn for her successfull idea! WHB RulesS.O.S. Cookies
.. that is to say the nicest gift I saw on the web and immediately adopted for my for my Christmas presents!
I had admired this lovely idea in Ann's blog Papilles et Pupilles. I did'nt have any doubt and start looking for the jars (almost unavailable at this period but ... lucky once! Santa Ikea got them!) and I have been weighting, layering, sealing, wrapping my sweet gourmet gifts in these last days.
Anne called them S.O.S. Cookies (and I thought it was nice to leave the same name) because they might be opened in emergency! If you keep a couple of jars in the pantry, they will be ready to helps in times of sweetness crisis, when you get that little wish but do not know if you store all ingredients, when suddenly some friends knock on the door for a cup of tea, when you wish to work with your children, even when sometime you would like to mess with your mate and then happily nibble together on the sofa watching a nice movie on tv, under a warm blanket!
Ingredients for a one-liter jar:
250 g flour 00
1 teaspoon baking powder (half a bag)
1 teaspoon baking soda
a pinch of salt
100 g oat flakes
200 g chocolate chips
100 g sugar cane
100 g caster sugar
100 g coarsely chopped walnuts (ora mix of nuts, walnuts, pecans)
- Jars must be perfectly clean and dry.
- Pour flour, baking powder and baking soda in it, mix well and beat the jar on the table to compact the flour.
- Add oat flakes and beat again on the table.
- Add chocolate chips, beat and crush with your fingers to compress.
- Add sugar cane and beat.
- Add caster sugar and beat.
- Add walnuts and crush with your fingers.
- Close the jar and voilà ... the gift is ready.
Just a nice bow around the jar and instructions to prepare cookies (you can print labels and apply them on the jar, or attach a little note wrapped with a ribbon). You can also add a baked biscuit in a transparent bag for food.
Making cookies: only 2 more ingredients usually available in the fridge!
- Pour the mixture of the jar into a bowl.
- Add 125 g of soft butter and a large beaten egg and mix well.
- If you like you can flavor with a teaspoon of vanilla extract or a little bit of orange zest or a tablespoon of rum.
- Shape little balls (sizing like ping-pong/golf ones) and place them well spaced on greaseproof paper on a baking tray .
- Bake at 180° for 13/15 minutes.
My cookies are a little dark because I used chopped chocolate instead of chips.
And if never throw away anything (as I do ...) and love recycling, you can use empty Nutella jars, funny decorated as shown here.
My suggestion for other cookies' mix:
WHB # 213 Round up
Tonight Saint Lucy came to visit the children leaving gifts for them!
It's an old Italian traditions still followed in some Northern regions. She is the equivalent of Saint Nicholas or Santa Klaus for other countries. You can have a look at our last S. Lucy's day here and here.
This year she has passed too, the good Saint never disappoints his beloved children and always offers something even to the oldest! She has been a bit more frugal than usual (much to my approval) but she indefinetely knows how to please gently and greedy her fans! As tradition, we prepared a tray with a little milk, bread and a tangerine for her and her donkey and we left Christmas lights switched on to let her recognize where to stop. But now, let me go and bring my S.O.S. sweet jars to my dearest friends ... Saint Lucy is coming to them too!
